Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot – Mamoiada
The Feast of St. Anthony the Abbot, known as Sant’Antoni de su Ohu (of the fire), takes place on January 16 and 17 in Mamoiada and is one of the oldest celebrations in Sardinia. The event officially opens the Sardinian Carnival with the lighting of 30-40 bonfires scattered around the village, around which wine and traditional sweets are shared.
The most anticipated moment is Jan. 17, with the first annual outing of the Mamuthones and Issohadores, who dance around the fires in an archaic ritual, suspended between the sacred and the profane, symbolizing fertility, protection and renewal under the blessing of the saint.
