Mamoiada

A jewel of history north of the Gennargentu

The town of Mamoiada, a jewel of the province of Nuoro, is located just north of the Gennargentu mountain massif. Inhabited since pre-Roman times, as evidenced by the number of nuraghi, menhirs and Domus de Janas in the area, today it has a few thousand inhabitants.

Over time it has been able to build its own fame, alive not only in Sardinia but also in the minds of the tourists who choose to visit it every year. This is also thanks to the renowned quality of the dairy products, cured meats and wines produced in this small village in Barbagia, particularly appreciated by those who choose to visit the area, often inserting it in a journey that winds between Nuoro, Orgosolo, Fonni and their surroundings.

Mamuthones and Issohadores: the meanings of an ancient Carnival

Mamoiada celebrates numerous festivals and village festivals. The Carnival celebrations begin on January 17, with the celebrations for Sant’Antonio Abate. On this day, the Mamuthones and the Issohadores appear around fires dedicated to the Saint, and begin a parade through the streets of the town, visiting different districts to the sound of cowbells first, and then lacing passers-by and guests, second. The party culminates on Shrove Tuesday, when organised groups are joined by spontaneous allegorical floats.
